Matt Gilroy to the Flyers?

As many of you may or may not know, Paul Holmgren (Flyers General Manager) has had his eyes locked on a new future prospect, giving the team a very bright defensive future. With stars such as Kimmo Timonen, Matt Carle, Ryan Parent, and Braydon Coburn already under contract, the Flyers would be setting themselves up with some extraordinary depth.

The top defensive prospects in the system right now are Kevin Marshall, a defenseman out of the Lewiston MAINEiacs system, and Luca Sbisa, who saw some time with the Flyers earlier this year. Don’t be surprised if you see him back up on the team for the playoff run seeing as all the salary cap issues disappear.

If you don’t know Matt Gilroy, here’s a brief background on him. He’s one of the leaders on the recent National title winning Boston Terriers, who also happened to take home the Hobey Baker award, given to the nation’s top defenseman. He led all blueliners in points with 32, and stands 6’2″ at about 202 lbs. Other teams currently rumored to be interested in him are the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. The one factor that could keep the Flyers away from Gilroy is his price tag, which is expected to be around $2.5 million, yet he’s well worth the cost.
