US Open 2009 Preview

Well ladies and gentlemen, it’s time once again for the toughest test in golf, the United States Open. Last years winner Tiger Woods looks to defend his crown after defeating Rocco Mediate in 91 holes in a thrilling classic.

This year the 109th showing of the tournament is being held at Bethpage State Park Golf Course, more commonly known as Bethpage Black. The last time the tournament was held at Bethpage, Tiger Woods took home the crown, edging out Sergio Garcia (2nd), and Phil Mickelson (4th). One of the more appealing qualities of this tournament, is the the venue is public, and not too far a drive for most of us, located in New York.

So onto my picks for this years tournament…

Obviously, the easy choice would be to take Tiger Woods to win it, but I’d rather go against the grain and root for the underdog. My pick to win this year is Paul Casey, he’s been playing supremely well, constantly finishing in the top 20 in nearly every tournament, and he’s always had the short game required to go low at a US Open Venue.

Projected top 5-

Paul Casey -3

Sergio Garcia -1

Tiger Woods E

Phil Mickelson +1

Rory McIlroy +2

Feel free to pick your own top five and their finishing scores in the comments below. This should be one hell of a weekend for the PGA, so let’s all sit back and watch Bethpage entangle the hopes and dreams of these professionals in it’s knee-high rough.
