Eagles Training Camp Update

Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson seems to favor Quintin Demps at free safety, despite the acquisition of Sean Jones.

Johnson said that he views Jones as more of a strong safety.

Johnson also talked about his cancer diagnosis, which came after he began experiencing severe back pain during the team’s 2008 playoff run.

And he has no intention of walking away from football. “It’s part of my life. It keeps me going. I don’t feel any different coaching. I’m coaching the same way.”

S Quintin Demps acknowledged that his first-half hit on Cardinals QB Kurt Warner in the NFC title game, for which Demps was flagged and fined, was a “cheap shot.”

For now, Demps is the kick returner and WR DeSean Jackson is the punt returner, but WR Jeremy Maclin is being considered for both jobs, and CB Ellis Hobbs could return kicks.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said that he’d like to see the team improve in the red zone.

The coaching staff might be trying to replace WR Reggie Brown’s decreased reps with increased praise; “Another player who has done an outstanding job is Reggie Brown,” Mornhinweg said. “He is healthy. It’s good to see him healthy and running fast and catching the ball. He’s smooth. He was impressive [Friday], as well as [Saturday] morning.”

Victor Abiamiri and Juqua Parker will be competing for the starting spot at left defensive end.

“That’s going to be a good battle between those [two],” defensive coordinator Jim Johnson said in quotes circulated by the team. “I can’t see right now who the starter is. It might be Victor, it might be JP.”

Said defensive coordinator Jim Johnson regarding rookie CB Macho Harris: “I see a guy that has a good feel for the game. The first couple of practices [I’ve seen he’s got] a good feel for the game. You look for things like that.”

Johnson thinks S Quintin Mikell will be a Pro Bowl player soon.

Despite the acquisition of CB Ellis Hobbs, Johnson said that Sheldon Brown will still start, and that Joselio Hanson will still work the nickel.

Mornhinweg also spoke of the ongoing Kevin Kolb experiment: “He is still progressing. He’s done a good [job] in this camp so far. He’s very comfortable with all of his progression and, his reads, his drops, his footwork, all the things he needs to see. His game management is typically very good. The preseason games will be very important for him as well.”

Eagles coach Andy Reid revealed that WR Kevin Curtis underwent a second surgical procedure on his groin two weeks ago.

Reid termed it a followup from his August sports hernia surgery and expects Curtis to be “back on the field” in June. Curtis may not be 100 percent until training camp, and he’s already in danger of losing playing time to hot-shot rookie Jeremy Maclin.

Eagles coach Andy Reid revealed that Eagles LG Todd Herremans recently underwent a minor knee cleanout.

Herremans did not practice Friday, but he will likely return for June OTAs.

Matt Schobel strained his hamstring during a workout Friday.
Schobel is doubtful to make a splash this season. He’s been unimpressive since the Eagles brought him over from Cincinnati in 2006 and may get cut during camp.

This is all some good news.  Along with the fact that Ellis Hobbs said that Maclin’s speed and hands are amazing and that he is really excited for this team and their chances for a ring.  He said if their not the NFC favorites then he doesn’t know who is.  Then Lenoard Weaver was talking about LeSean McCoy saying how fast he is.  He could not believe how this kid could stop and make a quick cut just like how LT (yes THE Tomlinson) does.  He also said that it was unreal how he can look as if hes going to dip his shoulder and put the hit on you then just 180 and change directions and burn right by you.  It was also noted that his hands were like glue.  Then my boy, Ingram has been equally impressive.  His blocking has been what has really opened the Eagles eyes.  They are really surprised as to how well he can block, more so then what they even thought.  And when Ingram lowered his shoulder and put Omar Gaither on his butt and Omar stood up shaking his head later saying “I was confused for a moment” that’s when the Eagles knew they made an awesome pick.

IF this doesn’t get you pumped up for this year then I really don’t know what will!  Our new guys are doing great and even Victor “MACHO” Harris is really raising an eyebrow.  No real news from what I see on the Undrafted Free Agents, we will have to wait for Leigh for that I suppose.  I can’t wait for football season to start again.  Hockey and Basketball too!
