One run is all it takes for Johan Santana<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> to win these days. Good thing for the New York Mets<\/a>, because that\u2019s about all they give him.<\/em><\/p>\n

Santana extended his dominant start to the season, striking out 10 in seven innings of two-hit ball, and New York scratched out a run Wednesday night on Pedro Feliz\u2019s<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> throwing error for a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cTonight was a great game, great atmosphere,\u201d Santana said. \u201cWe did everything the way it\u2019s supposed to be done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In their first visit to the Mets\u2019 new ballpark, Citi Field, the Phillies wasted an excellent performance from previously struggling starter Chan Ho Park<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> who allowed one hit in six shutout innings.<\/em><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t enough to beat Santana (4-1), who lowered his ERA to 0.91 and won 1-0 for the second time in six starts this year.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s great. He brings unbelievable energy to the game\u2014on and off the field,\u201d teammate Carlos Delgado<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> said. \u201cHe\u2019s been awesome. We\u2019ve been spoiled.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Delgado chugged home from first base on a bad hip when Feliz threw away pinch-hitter Fernando Tatis\u2019<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> infield single to third with two outs in the seventh. Right fielder Jayson Werth<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> retrieved the ball but double-clutched before a late throw to the plate, and Delgado scored with a feet-first slide.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSpeed kills,\u201d he said with a smile.<\/em><\/p>\n

New York won its third straight game for the first time this season, dropping Philadelphia to 8-3 on the road.<\/em><\/p>\n

After the game, the Mets put struggling starter Oliver Perez<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> (1-2, 9.97 ERA) on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right knee. Jonathon Niese<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> will be called up from the minors to start Friday night against Pittsburgh, keeping 40-year-old rookie Ken Takahashi<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> in the bullpen.<\/em><\/p>\n

The NL pitcher of the month for April, Santana threw 73 of 101 pitches for strikes and fanned at least 10 for the third time this year. Working on six days\u2019 rest, he was lifted for a pinch hitter after New York took the lead.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s really, really special,\u201d Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. \u201cThis is the most impressive I\u2019ve seen him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Pedro Feliciano<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> struck out Ryan Howard<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> with a runner on third to end the eighth, dropping the big slugger to 4 for 24 (.167) against the lefty specialist.<\/em><\/p>\n

Francisco Rodriguez<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in eight chances. Despite being outhit 3-2, New York won the opener of an eight-game homestand before a crowd of 37,600.<\/em><\/p>\n

Scott Eyre<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> (0-1) took the loss for the Phillies, who had won three straight and eight of 10. Philadelphia made three errors after entering the game with only five all season, fewest in the majors.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely frustrating. We\u2019ve played great defense all year long,\u201d center fielder Shane Victorino<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> said.<\/em><\/p>\n

Santana\u2019s run of consistent dominance has been remarkable. He has one loss in his last 23 starts, when Florida scored two unearned runs in a 2-1 victory April 12.<\/em><\/p>\n

The left-hander has allowed no more than two runs in 12 straight starts and is 13-1 in his last 14 decisions. He hasn\u2019t had much help, either: The Mets have managed 12 runs in his six starts this year, 10 while he was still in the game.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou catch yourself at third base just kind of watching him, enjoying the show,\u201d David Wright<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> said. \u201cIt\u2019d be nice to give him a nice, relaxing win\u2014put up eight runs and let him coast.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Park was roughed up by the Mets last Friday, issuing six walks in 4 2-3 innings of a 7-4 loss. He looked like a different pitcher this time.<\/em><\/p>\n

The right-hander entered with an 8.57 ERA, but the only hit he allowed was Daniel Murphy\u2019s<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> two-out double in the fifth.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a good day for me,\u201d Park said. \u201cI think the confidence is there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Park was lifted for pinch-hitter Eric Bruntlett<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> with a runner on second and two outs in the seventh. Santana struck out Bruntlett with a 94 mph fastball.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like we had to go for the run,\u201d Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.<\/em><\/p>\n

As Chan Ho Park said, It was indeed a good day for him, while he didn’t rack up 10 k’s like Santana did he still competed right with Santana.\u00a0 He was throwing a no hitter going into the top of the 7th I believe.\u00a0 Regardless our offense could not generate anything.\u00a0 Sadly enough we ended up falling to that score of 0-1.\u00a0 Lets steal a game from them tonight and split this series here then get ready to take on a Braves team that got the best of us in the begining of the year.\u00a0 Things are a little different now though.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
