The New York Mets<\/a> sure don\u2019t need any extra motivation playing against the defending World Series champions.<\/em><\/p>\n

Daniel Murphy<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> hit a two-run homer, Mike Pelfrey<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> pitched 5 1-3 effective innings and the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> 7-4 on Friday night in the first meeting between the two rivals.<\/em><\/p>\n

Before the game, general manager Omar Minaya backed off comments he made Thursday that the team lacked an edge. Perhaps his remarks inspired the Mets.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI guess we had an edge tonight,\u201d Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. \u201cI feel good about how we approached the game. We have to bring that level of intensity and focus every night no matter who we play.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Pelfrey (3-0) allowed three runs and seven hits. He also chipped in with two RBIs, matching his career total.<\/em><\/p>\n

J.J. Putz<\/a>\"\"<\/a>,<\/span> who blew a one-run lead in a loss to Florida on Wednesday, pitched a scoreless eighth. Francisco Rodriguez<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> finished for his fifth save in as many chances.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery game is important for us,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cHopefully this will start a streak.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Chase Utley<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> hit his eight homer of the season for the Phillies, who got another poor outing from a starter. Chan Ho Park<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> (0-1) gave up seven runs and eight hits, walking six in 4 2-3 innings.<\/em><\/p>\n

These teams have provided interesting down-to-the-wire races in the NL East the last two seasons. Aided by New York\u2019s September collapses, the Phillies have captured consecutive division titles and won the World Series last year. The Mets blew a seven-game lead with 17 games to play in 2007. They lost a 3 1\/2 -game lead with 17 remaining last season.<\/em><\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s early, the Mets are the ones chasing the Phillies and the first-place Marlins. New York (10-12) had lost seven of 10 coming in. Philadelphia (11-10) has dropped two straight after winning five in a row.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Mets jumped on Park early, taking a 5-0 lead in the third inning. Park, who won a four-man competition for the fifth starter\u2019s job in spring training, could be in danger of going back to the bullpen. He has an 8.57 ERA in five appearances, including four starts.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not ready to say Park won\u2019t be starting,\u201d Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. \u201cHe earned a chance this spring. You have to show patience, but our pitching has to get better.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

After Alex Cora<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> walked in the first, Murphy hit a high drive that landed in the first row of the right-field stands. Park walked Carlos Beltran<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> and David Wright<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> after the homer and fell behind Ryan Church<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> 3-0, before retiring him on a double-play grounder to end the inning.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Mets added a pair of runs in the second on sacrifice flies. Fernando Tatis<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> singled to start the inning and Omir Santos<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> followed with a double. Tatis scored on Pelfrey\u2019s fly to deep left and Santos came in on Jose Reyes<\/a>\u2019 fly to center.<\/em><\/p>\n

Santos drove in another run with a sac fly in the third to make it 5-0. But the Phillies got three runs back in the bottom half.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe had really good at-bats up and down the lineup,\u201d Murphy said.<\/em><\/p>\n

Raul Ibanez<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> delivered a broken-bat, two-run single with two outs. Pedro Feliz<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> followed with an RBI single to right to cut it to 5-3.<\/em><\/p>\n

Beltran led off the fifth with a double, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Wright singled him in to give the Mets a 6-3 lead. Pelfrey greeted reliever Chad Durbin<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> with a two-out, RBI single that made it 7-3.<\/em><\/p>\n

Utley hit a solo shot off Pedro Feliciano<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span> in the seventh. -yahoo.com<\/em><\/p>\n

Lets hope that it was a FLUKE that the Mets (grumble) won last night.\u00a0 Man those stinkin Met’s….I hope they still continue to struggle like we did earlier this year but again, our pitching again what the heck guys.\u00a0 I cannot believe I’m saying this but maybe it is time that we bump Chan Ho Park down and allow him to bite his nails.\u00a0 He won that spot and I was so excited for him because I really thought he was going to bring something special to this team, esp being that #5 pitcher.\u00a0 Well it has been the complete oppisite to say the least.\u00a0 As it stated above its hard to come back when your pitchers is giving up seven runs and eight hits, walking six in 4 2-3 innings.\u00a0 How can you win games like that…<\/p>\n
