The Philadelphia Eagles have addressed reports that cornerback Sheldon Brown wants out of town.<\/p>\n
And here\u2019s the team\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s very unfortunate and counterproductive that Sheldon has chosen to go public with his feelings about his situation. After thorough evaluation by himself and discussions with his family and agents, he chose to accept an extension of his rookie contract early that provided his family financial security for the rest of his life. It removed any concerns about health or performance that all other players in his draft class had to worry about. He has three years remaining on that contract and, after taking the signing bonus and his first two years of salary into account, we feel that Sheldon is being paid fairly. Focusing only on a player\u2019s salary for a given year is not a valid analysis.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere have been league MVP\u2019s, Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, and perennial Pro Bowlers who have been in a similar situation. All of their teams have required them to wait until their contract expired or there was only one year remaining before any adjustment took place. It is only in the most extraordinary, in fact, less than a handful of circumstances in the last ten years that any players two new years into a contract with three years left have been adjusted. We don\u2019t think this qualifies as an extraordinary circumstance.<\/p>\n
\u201cSheldon\u2019s comments under the circumstances actually serve to devalue him in a trade if we were willing to consider it; which we are not.\u201d<\/p>\n
The same statement could be used as to Shawn Andrews, Mike Patterson, and any other Eagles player who signed a long-term deal that, after a few years, suddenly didn\u2019t look quite as good in the ultimate bastion of \u201cWho\u2019s Got The Biggest, Um, Money Clip?\u201d \u2014 an NFL locker room.<\/p>\n
Well with that said I’m glad someone is putting their foot down on this issue. \u00a0Too many players are doing this right now, including our recent addtion Jason Peter’s who did it to the Bills (sorry Bills fans I like you guys), our best Exit of Terrel Owens, some other guys that I would not mind getting who are still UNDER CONTRACT are Anquan Boldin, and Chad Johnson. \u00a0This does not make it right for people to do this.<\/p>\n
We can argue all day that it’s wrong for a player to sign a contract then want a change once they feel their worth more. \u00a0Aka what I call the Drew Scumbaghaus or sorry I mean Drew Rosenhaus effect. \u00a0At the same time is it fair for an organization to sit there and just CUT a player right out of his current contract because they feel hes not playing up to his potential and maybe they want to save some money \u00a0Well…..think of that one for a while, and get back to me!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
