Ryan Howard has reportedly agreed to a five year extension that will kick in for the 2012 season.<\/p>\n
Howard will make $20 million in 2012-2013, $25 million in 2014-2016, and a $23 million club option for 2017.<\/p>\n
The contract also includes a $10 million buyout option and a limited no trade clause.<\/p>\n
Now that Howard’s deal is finished I find myself asking what happens to Jayson Werth? Remember theres only so much money to spread around.<\/p>\n
Do the Phillies bite the bullet and sign Werth long term?<\/p>\n
Do the Phillies trade Werth at the deadline?<\/p>\n
Do the Phillies just let Werth walk at the end of the year?<\/p>\n
Who knows, but one thing I know is those options aren’t very appealing. I’m guessing the Phillies will look to trade Ibanez either sometime this year, or during the off-season to make room for Werth’s contract. If they fail to do that they’ll be stuck with a lefty heavy lineup since Dom Brown – left handed hitter – will be Werth’s replacement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
