Ouch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Ryan Howard spent two nights in the hospital this weekend. Raul Ibanez is injured, Jimmy Rollins\u00a0 is getting booed and not even a strong outing by Cole Hamels is enough to boost the slumping Phillies these days.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Brian Roberts had the decisive hit for the second straight game, a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, and the Baltimore Orioles completed a three-game sweep of Philadelphia with a 2-1 victory Sunday.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>\u201cIf we can find a way to lose one, that\u2019s what\u2019s happening,\u201d said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, ejected in the eighth inning for arguing a call at first base.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Roberts\u2019 RBI single to center off Hamels (4-3) made it 2-1 and sent the Orioles to their fifth straight win. Roberts also hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth off Ryan Madson in a 6-5 victory Saturday night.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>\u201cHe\u2019s in the middle of things every game, whether it\u2019s in the field or at bat,\u201d Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. \u201cHe seizes the opportunity whenever it is.\u201d<\/em> <em>The World Series champion Phillies paid for it. The NL East leaders have lost a season-high six straight, getting swept at home in consecutive interleague series by Toronto and Baltimore. Philadelphia went 1-8 on its homestand and fell to 13-22 at home\u2014the Phillies are a major league-best 23-9 on the road.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>They start a nine-game road trip Tuesday at Tampa Bay.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>\u201cI think it won\u2019t hurt us to get on the road,\u201d Manuel said. \u201cBut we\u2019ve got to play better baseball than that on the road.\u201d<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Howard sat out after spending another night in the hospital with flu symptoms, ending his streak of 343 straight games played since May 25, 2007. It was the longest active streak in the majors.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Howard had a CT scan and needed antibiotics. He might have a sinus infection, Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan said.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Jim Johnson tossed a scoreless eighth for the Orioles and George Sherrill worked a perfect ninth for his 15th save.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Roberts\u2019 key single made a winner of starter Jeremy Guthrie (5-7) for the first time since May 25. Guthrie tossed three-hit ball over seven innings and allowed only Greg Dobbs\u2019 fourth homer in the second inning.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Robert Andino led off the Baltimore eighth with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. Roberts lined a single and the Orioles were on their way toward matching their longest winning streak of the season.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>\u201cThere are worse things to get used to,\u201d Roberts said.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Manuel was ejected in the eighth by first base umpire Larry Vanover for arguing what appeared to be a blown call. Rollins hit a slow grounder to first baseman Ty Wigginton, who attempted to tag Rollins before he got to first. TV replays showed Rollins avoided the swipe, but he was called out and Manuel came running out of the dugout to protest.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Rollins went 0 for 4 to drop his average to .217 and heard boos after his at-bats as his slow start has morphed into the worst season of his career.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Manuel insisted he won\u2019t drop Rollins from the leadoff spot again.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>The Phillies have lost three games by one run and another in extra innings during their losing streak. With Howard ill, Monday\u2019s off day comes at an opportune time.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>\u201cI think the key is we\u2019re in first place,\u201d Hamels said. \u201cWe\u2019re fortunate everyone in the NL East is playing really bad.\u201d<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Hamels gave the overworked bullpen some needed rest with 10 strikeouts over eight innings. He walked none and gave up nine hits.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Howard\u2019s absence provided an opportunity for Dobbs and he delivered just like the 2006 NL MVP. Dobbs, batting only .210 coming into the game, led off the second with a homer to right that made it 1-0.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Guthrie has allowed 28 runs in the first two innings this season and only 27 from the third inning on. He struck out four.<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>\u201cThis team has battled all year and they picked me up today,\u201d Guthrie said. \u201cPitching against a guy like Hamels makes you focus a little more. They\u2019ve been in a tough stretch and we wanted to take advantage of it.\u201d<\/em><em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em>Roberts doubled in the sixth, stole third and scored on Adam Jones\u2019\u00a0 opposite-field single to right with two outs. -yahoo.com<\/em> I would be lying to you if I told you that watching the Phillies right now is a hard pill to swallow. \u00a0If you told me over 15 games ago that we would be in first by 4 games. \u00a0If you also told me that during those 15 games the Phillies would win 4 of them I would say &#8220;YEAH RIGHT&#8221;. \u00a0Then lastly if you said the Phillies are still in first, I would honestly almost laugh. \u00a0But somehow and someway we are still in first place. \u00a0I have no clue how or why but the Mets have not capitalized yet on the opportunity to take this division by the horns and command control of it. \u00a0Lets hope that the Phillies funk is over because it&#8217;s getting really hard to watch games right now. \u00a0THIS IS NOT how they play and for some reason they continue to lose games which is not them. \u00a0They are the comeback kids and it&#8217;s almost as if the crowd went silent. \u00a0But in fact it has not, I must say even though I hear the boo&#8217;s and the screaming I am rather impressed with how Phillies fans are treating this double sweep here. \u00a0Almost as if were all in a bad dream just waiting to snap out of it. \u00a0Well it is embarrassing to watch right now, but I have faith, after all we are the WORLD CHAMPS. \u00a0Phillies will come back around for sure! \u00a0It will start this week when they open up a 3 games series against the team that allowed them to become the World Champs. \u00a0The team that allowed them to hoist up that trophy in the air and accomplish the one and only goal that you set every year. \u00a0It might bring them up to that level of play again. \u00a0Lets at least hope&#8230;because after that then open up another 3 game series to a team that just swept them at home, the Toronto Blue Jays. \u00a0That sweep should of never happened!<em> <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ryan Howard spent two nights in the hospital this weekend.
