Game 1<\/strong> –\u00a0Opening a doubleheader following a 12-inning game the night before, the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals both needed some solid starting pitching.The Phillies got it. The Nationals didn\u2019t come close.<\/p>\n

Brett Myers(notes) cranked out seven innings, Raul Ibanez(notes) hit a pair of home runs, and the Phillies again battered the National League\u2019s worst pitching staff Saturday in an 8-5 victory in the opener of the day-night doubleheader.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia also got a good inning from closer Brad Lidge(notes), while things got worse for the Nationals: Starter Scott Olsen(notes) left after the game to have an MRI exam on his throwing shoulder.<\/p>\n

Myers (3-2) matched his longest outing of season while striking out a season-high eight batters and allowing a season-low three hits. It was just the tonic for a team that used seven pitchers, including a projected Saturday starter, in Friday\u2019s 10-6 extra-inning win.
\n\u201cWe needed somebody to step up and eat up some innings,\u201d Ibanez said. \u201cNot only did he do that, but he turned in a brilliant performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ibanez finished with three hits, three runs and four RBIs. He hit a solo home run to center in the first and a three-run shot off the facade above right-center in the third, his 12th homer of the season. He is 17 for 30 with five homers and 13 RBIs against the Nationals this season.<\/p>\n

How hot is he? Manager Charlie Manuel doesn\u2019t want to answer questions about his outfielder\u2014for fear of jinxing him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t need to talk about him,\u201d Manuel said. \u201cLeave him alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Manuel was more than happy to talk about Lidge, who had allowed at least one run in six straight appearances. The closer who was so invincible last season blew a save opportunity Friday night, so his work Saturday afternoon\u2014one inning, one hit allowed\u2014was worth more than just his sixth save of the season.
\n\u201cThat\u2019s how I\u2019ve always managed\u2014I get him out there as soon as I can,\u201d Manuel said. \u201cI think sometimes if you show people you\u2019ve got confidence in them, that definitely helps them.\u201d<\/p>\n

After using eight pitchers Friday night, Nationals manager Manny Acta was asked early Saturday what he expected from Olsen. He replied, \u201cEight innings.\u201d
\nInstead, Olsen (1-4) was gone after five and 94 pitches, having allowed nine hits, six runs (five earned). He gave up three homers, including two on fastballs that clocked only 85 miles per hour. Afterward, the left-hander complained of tightness in his shoulder and underwent a precautionary MRI exam.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did something that probably wouldn\u2019t help him\u2014he was thinking about his teammates,\u201d Acta said. \u201cHe wanted to go out there and give us as many innings as he could.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the fourth inning, the biggest drama was whether center fielder Shane Victorino(notes)\u2014acting on a pregame clubhouse dare\u2014could hit the water cooler in the Philadelphia bullpen with his final warmup toss when the Phillies took the field between innings. He came close a few times, but at least he would have more chances during the nightcap.<\/p>\n

Ryan Zimmerman(notes) hit a solo homer for Washington, extending his streak to 33 straight games in which he has reached base safely. -yahoo.com<\/p>\n

Game 2<\/strong> – So far game two is going just as well we are up right now at this point it is 7-5 in the top of the 6th with the bases loaded ZERO outs a 2-1 count to Ryan Howard who already has one home-run in the game is at the plate. \u00a0The other night it was the bottom half of the order that was carrying us and yet tonight it is the top half. \u00a0Right now they are hitting 9-12 between Rollins, Utley, Howard, Ibanez. \u00a0Again Ibanez homered as well. \u00a0Phillies bats are surely swinging right now, although it does not mean much because we are going against the worst pitching in the majors. \u00a0But maybe this could be the thing that jump starts us.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile <\/em> <\/em>Carpenter had his first pitching preformance which could of gone better, but also could of gone a lot worse. \u00a0He ended up going 4.1 innings with 8 hits 5 runs, 3 walks and 4 strike-outs. \u00a0As I said not great but what more could you ask for.<\/p>\n

Game was rainded out and went down in the books as a victory for the Phillies.<\/p>\n
